CDCK is a global company with a product that is 100% open source. Our team is 88 people and growing. We’re transforming the online community space. Our product powers a substantial segment of successful online communities, with >20,000 Discourse instances globally. We have thousands of paying customers, with a growing number of Fortune 500 companies on our list, alongside many leading players in the fast-growth technology, gaming and blockchain/web3 spaces.
We are looking for candidates in timezones encompassing UTC +1 > UTC -8 who have some overlap with the US/Eastern timezone. Applicants in other timezones will not be considered (even if they are willing to adjust their working hours, we don’t think it’s healthy).
Product managers at Discourse work as part of cross-functional teams typically made up of a product manager, a designer, and a small number of engineers. Teams work together to identify opportunities within their team’s domain to better meet the needs of users and customer, and to design, build, and iterate on solutions that address them.
As a product manager, you help bring context to the team about what customers would find valuable, and you work with design and engineering to facilitate shared understanding about what user’s need and what is technically feasible. You collaborate closely to design and build incremental changes that deliver value to users and help the team continue to learn.
You also communicate extensively with users, customers, and with people across the organization from a variety of roles in including sales, marketing, support, customer success, product development, and infrastructure. You build relationships and your own understanding of how each of these perspectives can help lead you to valuable and actionable insights. While your primary focus is on your team’s efforts, you do so in the context of what Discourse is doing as a whole, and regularly engage in company-wide and community-wide discussions.
Our hiring process includes a few short interviews and a 10-20 hour paid trial project that involves asynchronously collaborating to explore an opportunity to improve Discourse.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Facilitating healthy collaboration among a cross-functional team
- Gathering input and feedback from users, customers, and others in the business
- Discovering opportunities to address customer needs
- Exploring possible solutions to address customer needs
- Defining and prioritizing small, incremental changes to the product
- Communicating clearly about important decisions and changes being delivered
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has at least 2 years of experience in a product management role at a software company
- Loves to collaborate and build software with people in different roles
- Is familiar with some well-known product management tools or practices, and eager to learn more and explore how to apply them in an environment where asynchronous, written communication is the norm.
- Wants to help online communities thrive where members can connect and have meaningful conversations with each other.
- Is excited about the opportunity to work on an open source product with the community while developing a sustainable software as a service business that aims to offer Discourse to as much of the world as possible.
At Discourse, the ability to communicate well in writing is paramount. We use our own software, Discourse, for most communication and most of your interaction with customers and team members will be in writing. In order to live these values, we look for folks who are:
- Detail-oriented, proactive, and organized
- Able to make decisions quickly and communicate effectively
- Work well independently and remotely
- Kind to their co-workers
- Highly driven with an execution focus and a strong belief in our mission to make the internet a better place
We believe that high-quality benefits make our team more effective. We’ve been thoughtful about our benefits package which includes a completely flexible schedule, 5 weeks of vacation per year, funding for a co-working stipend, and much more!
Our Salary Framework is location and experience based and we’re happy to provide a range up front. We also give every employee a stake in the success of the business, regardless of seniority or role. All full-time employees are eligible to receive equity options in the company as part of our equity incentive program.
Lastly, we believe in having a welcoming workplace where people with diverse backgrounds and cultures can create something great together. We encourage you to apply, even if you don’t meet every qualification! Apply by sending a cover letter and resume to jobs@discourse.org.
